CARIBIC stands for ”Civil Aircraft for the Regular Investigation of the atmosphere Based on an Instrument Container”. The project CARIBIC is a co-operation of different scientific partners from Germany and Europe, led by the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry.
Since December of 2004, the container laboratory CARIBIC has been flying on long-distance flights on board of the Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 “Leverkusen” in service of scientific research. In the course of this, measurements are made in a height of 8 to 12 kilometers, a layer of the atmosphere that is especially interesting for climate research. For this atmosphere layer similarly significant parameters cannot be gathered by satellites or ground-based measurements.
The fully automated analysis laboratory in the form of a container weighs 1.5 tons and is equipped with 20 integrated scientific devices. During its development phase, the steep GmbH was assigned with EMC testing of the container and involved in the testing for flight approval.
