On July 22, 2021, the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use (BAAINBw) concluded a contract with steep GmbH for the design, manufacture and delivery of an air-transportable air traffic control system.
The modular design of the new system enables the location-independent construction of an airfield and approach control centre in containerised format, including the necessary sensors and technology. The German Armed Forces are thereby enabled to establish and operate a self-sufficient airfield in deployment – especially at deployment locations where an air operations infrastructure is not or insufficiently available. The air traffic control system can also be transported on all common vehicles, as well as by air transport with the A400M aircraft.
With this “airport to go”, as the responsible project legal advisor in the BAAINBw calls the air traffic control facility, the German Armed Forces can not only react flexibly to international challenges, but ultimately contribute to the safety of the soldiers in the operational areas.
