Participation in the German Armed Forces’ most important air defence system for the next 20 years
Bonn/Schrobenhausen. Waiting for take-off: The federal budget will be discussed in Berlin in the coming weeks. Among other things, the German Bundestag will decide whether the new “Tactical Air Defence System” (TLVS) should be purchased as a protective shield against airborne threats. What is special about this high-tech project for the German Armed Forces is the participation of over 80 medium-sized companies, more than half of them from Germany. In North Rhine-Westphalia, steep GmbH is waiting for green light from the federal capital. The company contributes expertise from Bonn to the major project, which runs as a joint venture between MBDA Germany and Lockheed Martin from the USA. The special expertise of the medium-sized Rhineland company: ensuring the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of the technologies used.
“We are proud of this and hope to make an important contribution to the modernisation of NATO’s defence capabilities and thus to the protection of our soldiers, but also of the civilian population,” says Stefan Ohlmann, Sales Manager of the Defence Division at steep. “The participation in the TLVS project is an important component for our corporate success”. With the award of the contract, further capacities in the field of EMC service would be provided, says the head of the company. “The contract is also an opportunity to present ourselves to international partners as an expert in the field of EMC and to expand our know-how”. Also and especially in times of Corona an important factor.
“We are very glad to have steep on board as a competent partner with a lot of expertise in its field,” explains Thomas Gottschild, Managing Director of MBDA Deutschland GmbH. “The strength of TLVS is the more than 80 medium-sized subcontractors in various regions. At peak times, more than 6,000 highly qualified employees will benefit from the realisation of TLVS – the majority in Germany,” says Gottschild.
The protective screen TLVS is designed to ward off airborne threats, for example from missiles, fighter planes, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles. Current defence systems are already reaching their performance limits today and will have to be replaced within the next ten years.
steep’s particular expertise for this project lies in the area of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). The Bonn-based company is responsible for ensuring that the highly complex electronics installed in the TLVS do not interfere with each other. Special EMC engineering with extensive EMC conformity tests ensure that electromagnetic fields do not interfere with the function of other devices or even render them ineffective.
