The Ministry of Justice Hesse positively decided on the extension option of the partially privatized operation model of the Correctional Facility Hünfeld. Thus, the contract between the state and the steep GmbH as private operator will be extended by three years until December 31, 2021.
The basis for this positive decision on the contract extension was an externally conducted performance audit. The audit showed that, compared to federal prisons, considerable costs can be saved through partially privatized operation.
“The partial privatization of the correctional facility Hünfeld is a success model. We do not only experience this every day in practice, in which cooperation with the private operator runs smoothly. The performance audit also showed that the partial privatization is economical and efficient”, says Eva Kühne-Hörmann, Minister of Justice in Hesse.
Within the framework of the contract extension, steep will continue to perform non-sovereign tasks in the correctional facility Hünfeld for the next three years. These tasks include, among others, the operation of the workshops, the psychological-, social-, and medical care of prisoners, as well as facility management, including cleaning, maintenance and repair of technical installations. With a total of 95 employees, steep represents approximately 40% of the personnel employed in the prison. The operations manager and steep-employee, Oliver Krah, emphasizes that the cooperation between federal staff and steep employees is shaped by good collegiality.
We are pleased with the decision of the Ministry of Justice, Hesse, and look forward to three further years of good cooperation.
Since 2005, the steep GmbH performs non-sovereign tasks in the partially privatized Correctional Facility Hünfeld. For the first time, all services incurred in a correctional institution were handed over to a private service provider. Since May 1, 2014, the steep GmbH is also responsible for the workshops of the Correctional Facility Heidering.
